  • Hi there

I am a Mathematics Education Consultant working for The Mathematical Association of Victoria, in Melbourne Australia. Currently I am under contract to work for the (Australian) National Sports Museum, located in Melbourne. We are putting together a digital app that may be downloaded to a phone or tablet and used while taking an educational tour of the museum. The major goal of this app is to help visitors, particularly school children who often visit, to link their love of sports to mathematics.

As part of this app we would like to use images that either already appear in the museum, or are closely linked to displays. I am interested in the photo of diver Matthew Mitcham located at
    http://www.flowjournal.org/200.....low-staff/

The Mathematical Association of Victoria will not use the image in any other way. I have attached a scan of a letter from the National Sports Museum explaining that this is entirely an educational and non-commercial activity.

If you are not the owners of the image, please provide us with a link to the owners, and we will seek permission there. We would be most grateful if you can provide us with permission to use this image. Being a not-for-profit enterprise, The Mathematical Association of Victoria would prefer this permission at no charge.

    Best wishes
    Ian Lowe

  • Dear Mr. Lowe,

Thank you so much for your comment/email inquiring about the use of an image from one of our columns. (http://www.flowjournal.org/200.....low-staff/) The museum and app project you detailed sounds fascinating and we would love to be of help, if we can. However, the Flow journal often only hosts images form other sites and places on the internet, and does not generally possess the rights or copyright for their use or ownership.

I attempted to trace down the image — I assumed you were interested in the first image to appear on the column, that of Mitcham diving against a black background — but the site which we borrowed the image from and linked to (The Lost Angeles Times) is no longer hosting the image. Our column is 8 years old and so it is not surprising that the original host has taken down the image. I will include a link to the original image — http://www.latimes.com/sports/.....3179.story — an you can try to contact The Los Angeles Times about acquiring and using the image. Other than that, unfortunately, I am not sure that there is anything else that we here at Flow can do to help you.

We wish you the best of luck acquiring the image and going forward with your projects.
    All the best,
